Sen. Kowall, colleagues approve resolution declaring Feb. 3 Go Red for Women Day

LANSING —The Michigan Senate recently approved a resolution to recognize Feb. 3 as “Go Red for Women Day” in Michigan, said Sen. Mike Kowall, R-White Lake.

Senate Resolution 4 declares Thursday, Feb. 3 as a day to wear red in recognition of family, friends and neighbors who have suffered from heart disease and as a show of support for the fight against it.

“Nearly half a million women die from cardiovascular disease every year. That’s unacceptable,” Kowall said. “We can help reduce the number of lives cut short by raising awareness of heart-related illnesses.”

Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and research has shown that 80 percent of women’s cardiac events could have been prevented if women made the right choices for their hearts and were aware of the symptoms of a heart attack.

Cardiovascular disease claims the lives of 460,000 women a year, and only one out of three women can properly identify the symptoms of a heart attack.

“We can show our mothers, grandmothers, daughters, sisters, aunts and nieces how important heart health is by wearing red on February 3,” Kowall said. “Together, we can raise awareness and help save lives.”

Started in 2004 by the American Heart Association, Go Red for Women Day is celebrated across the country to raise awareness of heart disease and prevention.

The Senate also recently approved Senate Resolution 5, which proclaims the entire month of February as Heart Health Awareness Month in Michigan.
